Ughhhh
These bands are just so safe now and its horrible. These tidal waves of genres flood the towns that make up the general public of listeners and its just how history works. In the late 90’s and early 00’s it was pop punk, in 03 “Emo” hit swept us up with Taking Back Sunday, Thursday, Thrice, Afi, Finch, Brand new, Underoath, And a whole slew of others releasing their seminal records. Well That wave seems to have run its course after 5 years and now we are being bombarded with lazy safe mid tempo pop rock. Bands like Every Avenue, The Maine, The Morning Light, Sing It Loud, and now victory has thrown in their three new additions with The Scenic, Jaimes Elsewhere, and Thieves and Villains.
Theres not much to say about these dudes except get ready for the same mid tempo beat to keep steady through 11 songs straight (and i am so damned weary that these bros didn’t put an acoustic song on here. is that trend over finally?). The lyrics are all pretty much the classic boy loves girl but doesn’t understand why she gives him a rough time bullshit, i cant find one original line in here. Its just not very fresh.
The dudes voice doesn’t really stand out against his peers, like the kid in the maine sounds different and the dude in jaimes elsewhere’s voice is too high for him not to be considered castrated but pretty much everyone else in this miserable genre sounds the exact same.
The guitar never really shreds but instead seems content to just repeat different 3 chord structures throught the whole damn thing with simplistic single note delay pedal picking over said chords. And the bass seems happy to play second fiddle to the guitar with just mimicking his buddies rhythm guitar leads.
all in all I’m sure this band will have a nice long 3 album career seeing as this new genre is just starting to gain speed and these dudes fit the bill just as much as any of the others but just know this album is something i cant recommend or condone and after this review is over its going into my 1000 strong album collection never to be seen again.
